HOUSE REGULATIONS AND MAP
Smoking
It is forbidden to smoke in communal areas (i.e. the kitchen, hallways, staircases). You are allowed to smoke in your own (single!) room.
Changes in the unit
It is not permitted to paint walls and ceilings in your unit. Please do not to put up posters, paintings or any other form of decoration, which might cause permanent damage to the walls. If you want advice on this subject, contact the R.A's or the Caretakers.
Pets
Pets are not allowed.
Subletting
It is strictly forbidden to sublet the leased accommodation. If you suspect illegal tenancy on the premises, we urge you to report this to De Key.
Quiet hours
Quiet hours start at 11 p.m. No loud voices or music after this time. Beside quiet hours, we expect you to do your best to not cause any noise nuisance or other inconvenience to your fellow-tenants and/or neighbours of the building.
Neighbours
During your stay in Amsterdam you will be living together with a lot of people in a comparatively small area. Be considerate of your fellow-tenants and the tenants of the adjacent premises. Keep windows closed during social gatherings. This reduces noise nuisance for your neighbours and prevents complaints.
Visitors
You are allowed to have visitors (in your single room) for up to a week, as long as you inform De key in advance. Please send an e-mail to shortstay@dekey.nl with the expected arrival date and departure date of your guest(s) and the number of guests. If you share a room, you must provide us with written permission of your roommate.
Roommate 'Bill of Right's'
Your enjoyment of life in a shared room will depend, to a large extent, on the thoughtful consideration that you demonstrate for each other.
Basic rights of a roommate include:
1. The right to read and study free from undue interference in one's room. Unreasonable noise and other distractions inhibit the exercise of this right.
2. The right to sleep without undue disturbance from noise, guests of roommate, etc.
3. The right to expect that a roommate will respect one's personal belongings.
4. The right to a clean living environment.
5. The right to free access to one's room and facilities without pressure from a roommate.
6. The right to privacy.
7. The right to host guests with the expectation that guests are to respect the rights of the host's roommate and other residents.
8. The right for redress of grievances. The RA or Caretaker is available for assistance in settling conflicts.
9. The right to expect reasonable cooperation in the use of ‘room shared' space.
10. The right to expect reasonable cooperation in the use of ‘room shared' appliances and a commitment to honor agreed upon payment procedures.
Please remember that mature adults are expected to accept responsibility for the welfare of other.
Consequences of misbehaviour
We expect you to behave as a good tenant. This means that you must refrain from causing nuisance to other tenants and neighbours. If you do misbehave and complaints are filed against you, De Key will take the following actions:
• Give the tenant in question an official warning (written or verbal)
• Give the tenant in question a (second) written warning (email or letter)
• Invite the tenant in question for a meeting with either a representative from De Key or the University.
• If the tenant continues to misbehave, De Key will take legal action to evict the tenant. In practice, this means that De Key will bring the case to court. If the judge pronounces judgement on the tenant, the tenant will be evicted and charged the costs of the legal procedure. These costs will amount to at least € 1000 (price level 2007).
Depending on the gravity of the situation, De Key may skip one or more of the actions described here in order to speed up the process, especially in cases where eviction seems to be the only acceptable solution.
Energy use
Global warming is becoming an increasingly important world issue. We ask students to make an effort to save energy. When you leave your apartment, please make sure that the lights are switched off and the radiator or central heating is turned down. Also, please turn off the lights in hallways and communal rooms.
