Local Council Tax / Waternet

Local Council taxes

The rent you pay for your room is all-in, which means it includes payment for all services such as energy, water, internet, fixtures and furniture in your accommodation and so forth.
However, local taxes are not included in the rent. You will be responsible for paying these taxes, which the local authorities impose on all residents. There are two types of taxes:

1. Waste materials tax

In order to cover the costs of collection and processing of household waste, every household in Amsterdam is required to pay the waste materials tax. In some districts of the city you can deposit your waste in special containers, while in other districts your household waste will be collected. All waste ultimately ends up at the waste processing centre. The waste materials levy is collected by the local authority tax office.

2. Anti-pollution levy and residents’ tax

All residents and companies are required to pay taxes to cover the costs of water defences and for water purification. The district water board collects this tax (Waternet in Amsterdam and Amstelveen, Hoogheemraadschap Rijnland [the Rijnland District Water Control Board] in Haarlem).

Responsibility

Please note that the registered tenant (not De Key) is responsible to settle the imposed Local Council Tax.

Avoiding tax payment

Most of you will receive a tax bill from Waternet or from the Local Council.
You probably do not have to pay for these taxes! But you need to fill out a remission form first. How? We will explain:

Together with the Waternet bill / Local Council Tax bill, you receive a form "Bezwaar en Verzoek" (translation: "Objection and Request" and an envelope. On the form, tick the box that says "Verzoek tot kwijtschelding" (Request for remission). Sign the form with your autograph and date, and use the enclosed envelope to send your request back to Waternet.

Some days later, you will receive your Remission Form.

If you live at Rode Kruislaan or Bergwijkdreef, please send this form to:

Postbus 191

If you live at one of our other rooms, please send the form to:
Gemeente Amsterdam

Whether or not remission is granted depends on your financial situation.
