Like any other city, Amsterdam has its share of crime.
Here are some important guidelines for keeping you safe: - Do not leave your valuables unattended, even if it is just for a moment
- Purses, book bags, jackets, cellular telephones and laptops all make quick easy targets for thieves
- Wherever you are - on the street, in an office building or shopping mall, driving, waiting for a bus or subway - stay alert and tuned in to your surroundings, better not wear headphones
- Send the message that you are calm, confident and know where you are going
Trust your instincts. If something or someone makes you uneasy, avoid that person or leave and go to a populated area
- Know the neighbourhood where you live and work. Check out where the police station is located and where restaurants and stores are located
- Stick to well-traveled streets. Avoid shortcuts through parks, parking lots or alleys
- At night, travel in groups if possible
- Don't flash large amounts of cash or other tempting targets
- If someone tries to rob you, don't resist. Give up your property
- Report the crime to the police. Try to describe the attacker accurately
